The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is the federal law establishing fundamental workplace standards for employees in the private sector and in federal, state, and local governments. Its core provisions govern the federal minimum wage, overtime compensation for eligible nonexempt employees, recordkeeping requirements, & restrictions on child labor.

The FLSA also includes equal-pay protections & rules addressing such issues as hours worked, employee classification, compensable travel and training time, tips, breaks, & deductions from wages. Because violations can result in back-pay liability, liquidated damages, civil penalties, & litigation, employers must understand not only what the law requires, but also how to apply its standards consistently in everyday payroll, scheduling, & workforce-management decisions.

Session Highlights:

  • Understanding minimum wage & overtime protections
  • How to recognize the difference between exempt & nonexempt classifications

  • Understanding how tips, bonuses, commissions, & certain deductions may affect wages & overtime calculations
  • Recognize that unauthorized overtime generally must still be reported & paid, even when working it violates company policy
